The Big O

Imagine a vacation where all you do is sail on an 80ft catamaran for a week to exotic islands, scuba dive, drink Mai Tai’s and soak up that equator sunshine? Yeah it’s as good as it sounds. The Big O is that 80ft catamaran, all you gotta do is reserve your spot.

Sam Gorman, owner of the Big O, hired me to create the whole package. Logo, website, collateral, and even customized beach towels.

With private charters not exactly being cheap, the demographic for this company was 40-65, and I wanted to create a look that spoke to that demographic as well as took cues from icons from the 50s and 60s. Think Beverly Hilton and Chanel. I wanted to make an icon that was rich and classic.

Taking further inspiration from the likes of Doyald Young’s work, I created a logotype that worked in solid black, and another version with an Illustrated “O” for the clients specific needs.

The hard sans serif lines mixed with fine ligatures sweeping into a palm tree was my solution for a masculine, feminine, but still young at heart demographic.
